Description
The Natural Bridge in Virginia was a sacred site of the Native American Monacan tribe. It's tempting to believe that its sacredness was due to a mystical spiritual quality, and in its own way that may be so. It is said that the Natural Bridge appeared just as the Monacans needed to escape from the Powhatans centuries before the arrival of Europeans in North America. Natural Bridge is one of the oldest tourist destinations in the United States. The Bridge has been included in several 'Seven Natural Wonders of the World' lists, mostly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark, a Virginia Historic Landmark, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Natural Bridge was formed when Cedar Creek (a small tributary of the James River) carved out a gorge in the mountainous limestone terrain, forming a natural arch 215 ft (65.532 m) high with a span of 90 ft (27.432 m). It consists of horizontal limestone strata, and is the remains of the roof of a cave or tunnel through which the creek once flowed. Legend holds that a young George Washington surveyed the Natural Bridge site for Lord Fairfax. The initials 'GW' are carved into the side of the bridge. Just before the American Revolution and writing of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson purchased 157 acres of land including the Natural Bridge from King George III of England for 20 shillings. He called it "the most Sublime of nature's works". Jefferson built a two-room log cabin, with one room reserved for guests, beginning its use as a retreat/
